One of only 64 Forbes Five Star restaurants in the world, Herons is the signature restaurant of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, the intimate 98-seat dining room features a full-view kitchen, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows with views.

The Umstead is pleased to offer homegrown vegetables and herbs from our nearby dedicated farm. Herons has been recognized by Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, and Southern Living, in addition to receiving numerous accolades and awards including Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA. Herons Hours

  • Breakfast: Monday through Friday 6:30am - 10:00am 
  • Lunch: Monday through Friday 11:30am - 2:00pm 
  • Brunch: Saturday and Sunday 7:00am - 1:00pm 
  • Dinner: Monday through Thursday 5:30pm - 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 5:30pm - 9:30 pm 

Herons Details

  • Private Dining Room: seating for 9 to 12 guests. Four course and five course Chef Tasting Menu available. 
  • Semi Private Dining Room: seating for 6 to 8 guests.
  • Dress Code: Business Casual (shorts and sandals not permitted)

The Culinary Team masterfully redefines American cooking by presenting classic ideas translated with local, seasonal ingredients and precise technique, brightening each ingredient's flavor and purpose. Select from the 3 or 4 course prix fixe menu or indulge in the Art Tour Menu, a special Chef's tasting menu inspired by The Umstead's Art Collection.  Recently rated 5 stars by Food Critic Greg Cox, this unique experience begins with a ceremonial tea service followed by 8 delectable courses, each showcasing Executive Chef Steven Greene's approach to food and driven by his choice and presentation.

*Sold Out* Guest Chef Dinner with Curtis Duffy:

Herons is excited to welcome three-star Michelin chef Curtis Duffy for a special guest chef dinner with Executive Chef Steven Devereaux Greene and Executive Pastry Chef Jonathan Fisher on Friday, August 24. The trio will prepare a collaborative seven-course meal of progressive dishes made with exceptional seasonal ingredients for a one-of-a-kind experience. Priced at $185 per person (tax and gratuity not included), optional wine pairings are also available and provided by Duffy’s counterpart, Michael Muser, for an additional cost. Guests can reserve seats by calling the restaurant at 919-447-4050.

Wine Dinner Featuring Gundlach Bundschu:

Join us in Herons on Thursday, September 20th for a special wine dinner featuring Gundlach Bundschu, California’s oldest, family owned winery. Enjoy drinks in the Sunroom with winery host, Bill Shenas, before accompanying him for a 5-course dinner with wine pairings in the Herons Private Dining Room.
