One of only 64 Forbes Five Star restaurants in the world, Herons is the signature restaurant of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, the intimate 98-seat dining room features a full-view kitchen, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows with views.

The Umstead is pleased to offer homegrown vegetables and herbs from our nearby dedicated farm. Herons has been recognized by Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, and Southern Living, in addition to receiving numerous accolades and awards including Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA. Herons Hours

  • Breakfast: Monday through Friday 6:30am - 10:00am 
  • Lunch: Monday through Friday 11:30am - 2:00pm 
  • Brunch: Saturday and Sunday 7:00am - 1:00pm 
  • Dinner: Monday through Thursday 5:30pm - 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 5:30pm - 9:30 pm 

Herons Holiday Hours

Thanksgiving

  • Breakfast will be served in Herons from 6:30 am to 9:00 am and in the Bar & Lounge 9:00 am to 11:00 am. A Thanksgiving Buffet will be available in Herons from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm reservations required

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

  • Brunch will be served in Herons from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Christmas Dinner will be served in Herons from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm reservations required
  • Herons will be closed for dinner service on Wednesday, December 26th

New Year

  • Herons will operate under normal business hours on Monday, December 31st with a special New Year's Eve Dinner Menu available from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm reservations required
  • Brunch will be served New Year's Day in Herons from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Herons will be closed for dinner

Herons Details

  • Private Dining Room: seating for 9 to 12 guests. Four course and five course Chef Tasting Menu available. 
  • Semi Private Dining Room: seating for 6 to 8 guests.
  • Dress Code: Business Casual (shorts and sandals not permitted) 
  • Parking: Complimentary Valet Parking Available 

Herons Menus

The Culinary Team masterfully redefines American cooking by presenting classic ideas translated with local, seasonal ingredients and precise technique, brightening each ingredient's flavor and purpose. Select from the 3 or 4 course prix fixe menu or indulge in the Art Tour Menu, a special Chef's tasting menu inspired by The Umstead's Art Collection.  Recently rated 5 stars by Food Critic Greg Cox, this unique experience begins with a ceremonial tea service followed by 8 delectable courses, each showcasing Executive Chef Steven Greene's approach to food and driven by his choice and presentation.

Silent Auction and Guest Chef Dinner Benefiting the Southern Foodways Alliance

Join us Wednesday, December 5th in Herons for “Rooted in the South,” a guest chef event to benefit the Southern Foodways Alliance.  Chef David Bancroft of Acre in Auburn and Chef Kevin Johnson of The Grocery in Charleston join Executive Chef Steven Greene and Pastry Chef Jonathan Fisher in a collaborative menu highlighting the winter produce from our culinary farm.  The evening begins with a welcome reception and small, curated silent auction followed by an artistic, multi-course dinner in Herons, with 50% of the events proceeds donated to the SFA. White Truffle Tasting Menu

The "white diamond of Italy" returns to Herons the month of December with a special 8 course tasting featuring the most rare and delicate truffle in the world. Reservations available at 919-447-4050, full menu available here. *Due to the importing of the truffles, tickets much be purchased one week prior to the desired date of reservation.
