One of only 41 Forbes Five Star restaurants in the world, Herons is the signature restaurant of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, the intimate 98-seat dining room features a full-view kitchen, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows with views.

The Umstead is pleased to offer homegrown vegetables and herbs from our nearby dedicated farm. Herons has been recognized by Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, and Southern Living, in addition to receiving numerous accolades and awards including the 2019 James Beard Semifinalist for Best Chef in the Southeast for Chef Greene, Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA.   • Breakfast: Monday through Friday 6:30am - 10:00am 
  • Lunch: Monday through Friday 11:30am - 2:00pm 
  • Brunch: Saturday and Sunday 7:00am - 1:00pm 
  • Dinner: Monday through Thursday 5:30pm - 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 5:30pm - 9:30 pm

  • Private Dining Room: seating for 9 to 12 guests. Four course and five course Chef Tasting Menu available. 
  • Semi Private Dining Room: seating for 6 to 8 guests.
  • Dress Code: Business Casual (shorts and sandals not permitted) 
  • Parking: Complimentary Valet Parking Available 

Herons Menus

The Culinary Team masterfully redefines American cooking by presenting classic ideas translated with local, seasonal ingredients and precise technique, brightening each ingredient's flavor and purpose. One of only 5 restaurants to receive the News & Observers coveted 5 stars, Herons was also awarded their Restaurant of the Year for a second time in 2019, of which Food Critic Greg Cox says, “Playing on all the senses with rare virtuosity, the meal earned a place among the handful of most memorable meals of my life.” Select from the 3 or 4 course prix fixe menu or indulge in the Art Tour Menu, a special Chef's tasting menu inspired by The Umstead's Art Collection. This unique experience begins with a ceremonial tea service followed by 8 delectable courses, each showcasing Executive Chef Steven Greene and Pastry Chef Jonathan Fisher's approach to food and driven by their choice and presentation.

Special Events

Easter Buffet: Join us April 21st for an Easter Buffet in Herons. This special buffet features savory display stations, entrees and desserts along with our Easter Garden filled with chocolate bunnies, bon-bons, and other sweet treats. Easter menu and additional details can be found here.
