One of only 62 Forbes Five Star restaurants in the world, Herons is the signature restaurant of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, the intimate 98-seat dining room features a full-view kitchen, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows with views.

The Umstead is pleased to offer homegrown vegetables and herbs from our nearby dedicated farm. Herons has been recognized by Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, and Southern Living, in addition to receiving numerous accolades and awards including Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA.   • Breakfast: Monday through Friday 6:30am - 10:00am 
  • Lunch: Monday through Friday 11:30am - 2:00pm 
  • Brunch: Saturday and Sunday 7:00am - 1:00pm 
  • Dinner: Monday through Thursday 5:30pm - 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 5:30pm - 9:30 pm 
  • Private Dining Room: seating for 9 to 12 guests. Four course and five course Chef Tasting Menu available. 
  • Semi Private Dining Room: seating for 6 to 8 guests.
  • Dress Code: Business Casual (shorts and sandals not permitted) 
  • Parking: Complimentary Valet Parking Available

Herons Menus

The Culinary Team masterfully redefines American cooking by presenting classic ideas translated with local, seasonal ingredients and precise technique, brightening each ingredient's flavor and purpose. Select from the 3 or 4 course prix fixe menu or indulge in the Chef's Kaiseki Tasting Menu. This special tasting menu begins with a ceremonial tea service followed by 10 delectable courses, showcasing Executive Chef Steven Greene's approach to food and driven by his choice and presentation.

Herons Events & Holiday Menus

White Truffle Kaiseki Menu: Herons will be offering a special White Truffle Kaiseki Chef's Tasting Menu the month of December in addition to our regular menus. Due to importation of the truffles, tickets must be purchased a week prior to desired date, menu available here.

Christmas Dinner: Herons will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas day from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and will be serving a special four course menu, available here.

Christmas Brunch: Brunch will be served on Monday, December 25th from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. 

New Year's Eve Dinner:  Herons will serve a special four course dinner in Herons on New Year's Eve from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.  Menu available here.

New Year's Day Brunch:  Brunch will be served on New Year's Day from 8:00 am until 2:00 pm.  Herons will be closed for Dinner. 

Holiday Hours in Herons

Herons will be closed for Dinner Service on Tuesday, December 26th and Tuesday, January 2nd.

Join us on Tuesday, December 19th, as we celebrate the release of the Southern Foodways Alliance Guide to Cocktails. Sip cocktails from the book and mingle with co-authors Sara Camp Milam and Jerry Slater as they sign books and regale us with stories of the South's unique cocktail history.
