One of only 64 Forbes Five Star restaurants in the world, Herons is the signature restaurant of The Umstead Hotel and Spa. Open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch, the intimate 98-seat dining room features a full-view kitchen, original artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows with views.

The Umstead is pleased to offer homegrown vegetables and herbs from our nearby dedicated farm. Herons has been recognized by Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveler, and Southern Living, in addition to receiving numerous accolades and awards including Five Stars from Forbes Travel Guide and Five Diamonds from AAA. Herons Hours

  • Breakfast: Monday through Friday 6:30am - 10:00am 
  • Lunch: Monday through Friday 11:30am - 2:00pm 
  • Brunch: Saturday and Sunday 7:00am - 1:00pm 
  • Dinner: Monday through Thursday 5:30pm - 9:00pm, Friday and Saturday 5:30pm - 9:30 pm 
  • Herons will be closed on Tuesday, April 24th for dinner service for a special event with Brewery Bhavana
  • Breakfast will be served in Herons on Sunday, May 13th, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am. A Continental Breakfast will be available in the Bar & Lounge from 7:00 am to 10:00 am

  • Private Dining Room: seating for 9 to 12 guests. Four course and five course Chef Tasting Menu available. 
  • Semi Private Dining Room: seating for 6 to 8 guests.

Herons Menus

The Culinary Team masterfully redefines American cooking by presenting classic ideas translated with local, seasonal ingredients and precise technique, brightening each ingredient's flavor and purpose. Select from the 3 or 4 course prix fixe menu or indulge in the Chef's Kaiseki Tasting Menu. This special tasting menu begins with a ceremonial tea service followed by 10 delectable courses, showcasing Executive Chef Steven Greene's approach to food and driven by his choice and presentation.

Brewery Bhavana Beer Dinner: Join us in Herons on Tuesday, April 24th as we celebrate Brewery Bhavana's one year anniversary! Nationally recognized, Bhavana has recently been named one of America's best new restaurants by Bon Appetit Magazine and a James Beard Semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in the Country.  Inspired by the brewery, this culinary experience will be held in Herons and features a five course dinner created by two-time James Beard Semifinalist for Best Chef in the South East, Steven Green, paired with Brewery Bhavana's creations.  More details can be found here.
