Artist Reception with Clem Bedwell

The Umstead Hotel and Spa is pleased to present The Point of View of Water, an exhibition featuring new works by North Carolina-based artist Clem Bedwell. Known for his tactile, abstract paintings inspired by landscape and reflection, Bedwell’s work captures the ever-changing interplay of light, movement, and environment across the surface of water.

Drawing from careful observation, Bedwell explores how time of day, weather, and surrounding landscapes are continuously refracted and reimagined. His compositions blur the line between representation and abstraction, inviting viewers to experience a sense of motion and transformation within each piece.

We invite you to join us for an evening with Clem Bedwell as his latest collection is unveiled in the Art Gallery. Guests will have the opportunity to view the exhibition and experience the work immediately after it is installed, with pieces available for purchase.

Artist Reception with Jennifer McCurdy

The Umstead Hotel and Spa is pleased to present Inside the Curve, an exhibition featuring new works by renowned ceramic artist Jennifer McCurdy. Known for her sculptural porcelain vessels inspired by the natural world, McCurdy’s work captures the movement of wind, water, and flame through intricate carving and fluid form.

Working with translucent porcelain, McCurdy shapes each piece on a potter’s wheel before cutting and manipulating the clay to create a sense of motion that continues to evolve during the firing process. The resulting vessels reveal dramatic shifts of light and shadow, with many finished in luminous gold leaf interiors that reflect warmth and depth.
