The Umstead Welcomes Back Madonna Phillips

The Umstead Hotel and Spa is pleased to announce the 2nd gallery show by Raleigh artist Madonna Phillips. Unlike her exhibition in 2012 where the works had an ethereal, organic theme, these new pieces delve deep into the comparison of order and chaos. There is recognizable imagery - often splintered and scattered to form an exciting explosion of color and shape - sparkling under a veil of glass.

From the artist: “Patterns of chaos remind me of the patterns of broken tempered glass and the orderly rhythms of the pieces. To me, quantum action and gravity represent chaos and order. Chaos seems disorderly but produces energy and excitement.”

Madonna Phillips’ show will be on view and for sale from May 8th through August 2015.

Join us for a complimentary opening on May 14th from 6 - 8pm. To reserve your space contact us at 919-447-4065.

What's hot this Valentine's Day

This is the time of year that color explodes in the Gift Shop! Valentine’s Day allows for fuchsia, maroon, red, and pinks of all shades. It truly is the perfect place to buy your sweetie something special. The front window has an assortment of love-ly items. From Ben Owen’s China Red pottery, to Dayna Decker “Sierra” candles and diffusers, to decorated heart-shaped sugar cookies from Casual Delights in Cary, NC. Best sellers in the Gift Shop are jewelry, candles, house-made chocolate boxes and flowers.

We look forward to helping you select (and wrap) the perfect gift for your Valentine. It's not too late! To speak directly to The Gift Shop, call 919-447-4065.

Art Opening featuring Carrboro Artist Shelly Hehenberger

When I first saw Shelly’s work, I thought of nature; specifically the deep crevices of the earth through erosion. I marveled at the way she layers the mixture of cold wax medium, then colors and plays with the shapes that emerge from the work.

Since the design theme of the Umstead Hotel and Spa is “art in nature” her work was an easy fit. Shelly has lived in the Carolinas since 2000, and in the Carrboro area since 2008 with her husband and teenage daughter. Her work can also be seen at Frank Gallery on Franklin Street, Chapel Hill.

Join us for a complimentary opening on February 4 from 6 - 8pm. To reserve your space contact us at 919-447-4065.
