The Umstead Hotel is pleased to open its doors once again.  The Umstead Hotel and Spa has always made hygiene and cleanliness a high priority.  In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have enhanced our already stringent procedures to ensure the safety and comfort of our guests and associates.  In addition to following the directives of North Carolina’s Phase Two reopening plan, please find below a partial list of the enhancements we are making at The Umstead Hotel to create a safer place.


Upon Arrival

  • Doormen, Valets and Bellman shall be required to wear nitrile disposable gloves, and masks at all times
  • Both the Reception Desk and Concierge Desk will have preset queue positions for social distancing protocols
  • The Front Desk will be sanitized after each guest which will include the desk surface, credit card processing equipment and pens.   A touchless check-in option will also be available
  • Lobby area surfaces, elevators, touchpoints, and public restrooms will be sanitized every 30 minutes.  Additional Housekeeping staff have been assigned to ensure the consistent sanitation of these areas
  • Similar disinfecting will occur in the Back of House areas of the hotel, and associates will be provided essential personal protective equipment and anti-bacterial wash stations
  • Disinfectant stations for our guests’ use will be added in public areas



  • Cancellation penalties will not be charged until further notice. However, if you hold a reservation and do not arrive a no-show fee of one night’s room and tax will be applied
  • Enhanced levels of sanitation in each guest room and increased concentration within the bath areas. Door and cabinet handles, telephone, and coffee preparation areas will be thoroughly disinfected, as well.  Upon completion of cleaning each accommodation will be inspected by a supervisor
  • After departure of guests, all room linens, terry and glassware will be removed for cleaning and sanitization
  • All housekeeping, engineering, laundry and loss prevention associates will be required to wear nitrile disposable gloves and masks




  • The pool will be open from 8am to 8pm weather permitting, and will remained locked during off hours
  • Beginning August 15th, our pool will be moving to a reservations-only format for Saturdays & Sundays only to safely accommodate all of our guests. Please contact reservations by phone at 866-877-4141 to reserve seats for your upcoming weekend stay
  • The Fitness Studio is now open, but occupancy is limited to 6 people due to state COVID-19 regulations



In Room Dining

  • All In-Room Dining servers will deliver orders while wearing nitrile disposable gloves and masks as mandatory. The Umstead’s standard presentation of the food items will be temporarily modified in order to provide the least amount of contact between the guest and the server
  • Ice service will temporarily be self-service for guests on each floor



  • Herons will be open for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.  The dinner menu will feature a more casual food offering
  • Dining Room seating will be reduced to 56 seats, maintaining at least 6 feet between tables
  • Silverware will be rolled and tied in cloth napkins
  • Culinary and Stewarding staff will wear nitrile disposable gloves and masks
  • All tabletops, chairs, and chair arms will be thoroughly sanitized after each seating
  • All menus, check presenters and pens will be sanitized after each use; credit cards will be returned to the guest with a disposable wipe for the guest to cleanse their card
  • Food servers will wear mask and gloves.   For our Host and Front Servers, masks are mandatory

Bar & Lounge


  • Beginning Friday December 11th, 2020 to comply with Governor Cooper's current mandate The Bar & Lounge will cease alcohol sales at 9pm nightly, and the final seating for food service will be 9pm. The Bar must be vacated by all guests by 10pm nightly. 
  • Cocktails and other beverages will be served in the Bar & Lounge areas, as well as a limited food menu.
  • Proper social distancing will be practiced.  No seating at the bar will be available
  • Servers and bartenders will wear mandatory masks

Additional Outlets


Gift Shop


  • The desk surface, credit card processing machine and pens will be sanitized after each guest transaction
  • All shop surfaces and products will be sanitized regularly, if possible



The Spa


  • Spa guests with facial or massage appointments will have 45 minutes of access to the spa and facilities after the conclusion of their treatment. 
  • The steam room is currently unavailable to maintain social distancing for the health of our guests and staff 
  • The Spa will be limiting the number of treatments available each day, to maximize social distancing and allow time for sanitization of treatment rooms
  • The Spa is meeting or exceeding all state, local regulatory guidelines relating to sanitation and hygiene
  • Employees will wear masks and in some cases gloves
  • Providers are required to wash hands for a minimum of 20 seconds at the start and end of a treatment/service
  • Guests may forego accessing communal spaces if requested
  • No charges to guests unable to make their appointment due to illness with advance notice
  • All treatment spaces will be fully sanitized between each service
  • Clean and sanitized linens, towels, robes, and slippers will be provided for each service
  • Continue to provide clean sanitized linens, towels, robes, sandals, ect. for each service
