HAPPY NEW YEAR! We happily greeted 2016 in the midst of a confetti cannon countdown and champagne, and are ready to start the year off right. But after your fill of Hoppin’ John, cooked greens, and a solid list of resolutions, we have a perfect list to kick start the year:

The first thing on my list to do is enjoy the New Year’s Day brunch in Herons. No matter how you spent New Year’s Eve, this is the perfect way to continue the celebration. The a la carte menu is available from 7:00 am until 1:00 pm, and reservations can be made at 919-447-4050.

I know I’m not the only one who was busy for the holidays, between friends and family, and I plan on recharging my battery in the spa with the gift card I just received. Our Emerald package is one of our newest editions, debuting in November, and is just what I need to relax and detox. A dry brushing, bath soak, massage, and detoxifying juice are just the ticket. I may even throw in a personal training session and stick to my resolution this year.

Another “new” for this year is our newest gallery artist, Constance Pappalardo, who’s exhibit “Two Minds, One Artist” begins on January 20, with a welcome reception from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The exhibition represents two distinctive styles of the artist’s work. Emphasizing movement, Ms. Pappalardo’s colorful watercolors reflects the beauty and spontaneity of the natural world, as her intuition guides each stroke. This is complemented by her “Black and White” collection, which reflects Ms. Pappalardo’s unique visual experience listening to classical music, in a linear monochromatic style.

In the spirit of resolutions, our 2016 uncorked series will begin on January 28 at 6:00 pm with “New Year’s Resolutions” where sommelier, Hai Tran, will give you a few new ones to keep. Tickets are $40 all inclusive and can be purchased at 919-447-4050.

Out on the Town
Shen Yun Performing Arts will be at the Memorial Auditorium on January 23 and 24. This incredible performance is said to capture the spirit of a culture long lost, moving through regions, dynasties, and legends. I can’t wait to see this production that features nearly 100 artists and 400 costumes. Tickets begin at $56/person.

In honor of the late and great Martin Luther King, Jr., we are looking forward to the 15th annual African American Cultural Celebration at the North Carolina Museum of History on January 30. The theme is “Civil Rights, March On!” and will have over 75 musicians, storytellers, dancers, authors, artists, chefs, and more. The celebration is free, with more information found here.

We are closing out January with the Triangle Restaurant Week, from January 25 to January 31. Restaurants will feature various tasting menu options and other prix fixed menus all over town. Some of our favorites include Garland, Mateo, Piedmont, and Vin Rouge. For a full list, see here.

Compliments of the House
The arts are a huge part of the Umstead, and our permanent collection is just one of the ways we showcase that. Call for a complimentary tour, or guide yourself through the property and enjoy some of the gorgeous pieces highlighted along the way.
