Ridge Vineyards visits The Umstead

If you're not familiar with Ridge Vineyards, they have been making some of the most quintessential fine California wine since the 1960s and with the advent of Paul Draper to the operation, the wines continue to rise in acclaim.

This was proven to be the case when Steven Spurrier, an Englishman running a wine shop and wine school in Paris, organized a tasting of six top California cabernets and chardonnays to celebrate the American Bicentennial and the Ridge Monte Bello was chosen as one of the representatives from the United States. This would become known as the Judgement of Paris and would launch the California wine scene into the international eye. Predictably, the French disputed the findings as unfair and that the wines would show differently with age. 30 years later, Steven Spurrier would organize another tasting of the same wines. The Ridge Monte Bello in that tasting took home top honors further cementing the fact that Ridge was making some of the finest and most age-worthy wines in the world.

I am excited to share the craftsmanship of Ridge as we welcome David Gates, vice president and vineyard manager, to The Umstead as our guide on the evening of Tuesday, May 12th. In addition to the current releases, we will also be featuring a library selection of the Monte Bello Cabernet to be served alongside the current release for one to truly experience the age-worthiness of this producer's wines. It is a night that all wine lovers should not miss out on.

Menu available here.  May 12th, 6:30pm, $150++ per person. To reserve your space contact us at 919-447-4000.
