February is here, though it may not feel like it!  North Carolina winter weather is always unpredictable – they are calling for 70-degree temperatures next week but a snowstorm could rear its head before the month is over.  Regardless of how the weather looks outside, here are our favorite events this month we are most looking forward to:

  • NHL Hockey: Our Carolina Hurricanes are back at it this month, facing off against the Vegas Golden Nights on February 1st, the Calgary Flames on February 3rd, the Edmonton Oilers on February 15th, The Dallas Stars on February 16th, the New York Rangers on February 19th, and the LA Kings on February 26thTicket information can be found here.
  • Krispy Kreme Challenge: The Krispy Kreme donut shop downtown is a bit of an institution in Raleigh – all the locals know when the light is on, the donuts are hot and waiting for you.  So each year The Krispy Kreme Challenge makes a marathon out of its notoriety.  On February 2nd, runners will line up at the NC State bell tower and run 2.5 miles to the downtown Krispy Kreme where they must eat a dozen donuts before running the 2.5 miles back – all within an hour.  While you can participate at a more leisure pace (and without the 2400 calorie intake), the marathon is worth seeing even if just from the sidelines. More information can be found here.
  • Valentine’s Day dinner in Herons: Celebrate Valentine’s day with a four-course dinner in the intimate atmosphere of Herons.  Created by Chef Steven Greene and his counterpart, Pastry Chef Jonathan Fisher, this special menu will be available Thursday, February 14th through Saturday, February 16th.  Reserve your table at 919-447-4050.
  • Science Museum Speakeasy:  The Natural Science Museum – North Carolina’s most visited location – is having another adult night event “Speakeasy” this February 22nd.  This 21 and over only event features music from Sidecar Social Club and will have a beer, wine, cocktails, and food available for purchase.  You can also learn about Prohibition in North Carolina, test your chemical sense, test your 20’s slang, and crack the bootlegger's code.  The event begins at 7:00 pm, tickets and additional information available here.
  • Lecture: “Hamilton- How the Musical Remixes American History”: Visit the North Carolina Museum of Art on February 23rd for a lecture about one of the country’s most popular new musicals. Led by Richard Bell, associate professor of history at the University of Maryland, this event discusses what the show got right as well as elements of Hamilton’s life not mentioned in the musical, along with how our history is told through arts, music, and visual displays.  Be sure to view the presidential portraits in the NCMA’s American Galleries while there.  Ticket information and additional information available here.
