KEYS TO THE CITY: Unlock the Month

The triangle has been named one of the top cities to work in with Raleigh among the 5 American cities to visit, we couldn’t be happier to be a part of it. With so much changing, there is always something new going on to enjoy, both off property and on. As a Raleigh native, one of the questions I hear most often is where do the locals go? Being only 10 minutes from Raleigh, and 15 to 20 minutes from Durham and Chapel Hill, we are central to whatever you may fancy. Here are the key places to go this month:

For the wanderer in you, one of our favorite things to do is get to downtown Raleigh the first Friday of the month. All the local art galleries, studios, museums, and other stores are open late, some with wine tastings, live music, and more. It is a great opportunity to walk around and talk to all the local artisans in a casual setting.

On August 10, our own Pastry Chef Evan Sheridan and Chef De Cuisine John Childers are heading up this new supper series entitled, The Familiar Supper Club, with their first event, Sweet Corn and Swine, hosted at Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery. The event will include signature TOPO cocktails, snacks, and a four course dinner, all intricately focused and in accordance with the concept of a Chef’s responsibility to utilize what is provided by North Carolina’s farmers on their own accord. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Abundance NC to assist in further growing the network of viable farmers within North Carolina’s Food Shed. This event is more than farm to fork; it is nose to tail and leaf to root! Click here to purchase tickets

For the wine enthusiasts, the last Thursday of every month, we host our Umstead Uncorked wine tasting event. Let our sommelier, Hai Tran, walk you through a different region as you try various wines with small food bites to pair with. In this past year's Wine Spectator Top 100 list, three out of the top ten wines were from Portugal, so join us August 20 as we explore why this region is arguably one of the hottest and upcoming areas for world-class reds. To purchase tickets call 919-447-4200

If you love museums, stop by the North Carolina Museum of Art for their outdoor art and movies every Friday and Saturday night under the stars. Most are family friendly, with a few higher rated titles each season. Bring your own picnic or enjoy the popcorn and candy, as well as beer and wine, available for purchase.

Got beer? Breaking a world record, Forbes recently wrote about the just opened Raleigh Beer Garden, located on Glenwood south in Downtown Raleigh. Even if you are not interested in drinking beer, it is worth a trip to see the 366 individual taps, with over 140 NC beers alone, not to mention a cocktail bar featuring locally distilled spirits and on our list of new things to check out.
