Chilean Wine Dinner

The Umstead Resort and Spa is bringing a Chilean Wine Dinner to Cary on September 24, helping Chile establish its identity as the world’s eighth largest wine producer. The event, open to the public, will begin with a 6:30 p.m. reception, followed by a five-course dinner at 7:00 p.m. The dinner pairs an inspired menu with an outstanding selection of Chilean wines, for the price of $145 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity.

While canapés will be served along with an Amayna Sauvignon Blanc 2012 during the reception, the meal itself will take diners through delectable courses of crab, violet potato, quail, beef and for dessert, gianduja. The red and white wines served with each course are: Mayu Pedro Ximinez 2014, Vina Aquitania “Sol de Sol” Chardonnay 2009, Casa Silva “Los Lingues” Carmenere 2013, J. Bouchon Cabernet Sauvignon 2011, and Garcia & Schwaderer “Vigno” Carignan 2011, all purveyed by Vine Connections, the leading authority and educator in the U.S. for Chilean wine.  Menu hand crafted by Executive Chef, Steven Greene.

While Chile is a relatively new player in the world wine market, the country actually has a long history of viticulture dating back to the 16th century when Spanish conquistadors colonized the region. It was, however, the influx of stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels in the 1980s that catapulted Chile into the ranks of significant wine exporters. Today, Chile’s winegrowing region stretches, north to south, across a 700-mile series of valleys and climates that range from hot and dry in the north to cold and wet in the south.

According to Hai Tran, Sommelier of The Umstead, whose regularly scheduled Umstead Uncorked tasting program is one of the area’s hottest tickets, “the Chilean Wine Dinner is a special opportunity to be the first on your block to appreciate the many excellent varietals of a relatively new region.”

The Chilean Wine Dinner will take place in the hotel’s newly renovated Salon. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (919)447-4050. Click here to view menu
